Photo Challenge #11: Double Exposure Portraits

Aneta-Ivanova1

For this week’s photo challenge, you will layer a minimum of 2 photos:

  1. Take a profile photo of yourself using the tripod and timer against a fairly solid background that does not match the color of your hair or shirt (so it’s easy to delete).
  2. Take another photo of something that says something about you. It can be abstract or literal (what makes you feel happy? What do you think about? What can’t you escape? What do you want in your future.. the possibilities are endless!) This shot will be layered with the photo of you.
  3. Combine your images using the tools in Photoshop we’ll practice on Monday (tutorial in pickup box).

1 final image that combines your 2 images above is due Friday.

You will be graded on:

  • You have 2 images, in focus, taken by you.
  • The combined images demonstrate a well thought out interpretation of yourself.
  • Neat edge on your portrait
  • Editing
  • Employability Skills
  • Creativity/ thinking outside the box

Photographer of the Week: Dan Mountford

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Dan Mountford is a freelance graphic designer and photographer residing in Brighton, England. He is most well known for his stunning double exposure photography, which he describes as “a visual journey through our minds by calm and tidy means which the reality of everyday life does not show”. Mountford captures his dual subjects beautifully, giving life to new composite images that take on unique, surreal forms. Even more impressive, the exposures themselves are created entirely by camera (no photoshop involved)!

After viewing the images above, answer the questions below in the comments section of this post (in paragraph format. No #’s and PLEASE type in complete sentences).

  • Choose one image above. Describe the photos that are layered together to create the final image. How does combining these photos create a new, unique image?  How is the mood of the photo changed?
  • What do you think Dan Mountford is attempting to communicate through his work?
  • How does contrast play a role in the images above?
